The King of Hearts

This is the first piece that I have finished for my Education in Multicultural Society class final. This one deals with "race relations." Below is the poem that I wrote to go with the picture. Comments and critiques are welcome.

THE KING OF HEARTS

I am he called the King of Hearts
Shattered, broken, and in pain
In light and dark
I stand apart
Silent weeping falls like rain

Judge me not this face divided
This skin, this mask, so real yet fake
I peal it off
Show bone and muscle
Shed the shackles of my fate

Hearts and Clubs and Spades and Diamonds
Warring suits, conquer the rest
Out sits the Joker
With laughter violent
The truth he knows but still he jests

Different shapes and different colors
On our fronts bring hell and hate
So flip the cards
And shuffle quickly
An indiscriminant deck before it’s too late
