So I found out about the LA version of it only a week ago and scrambled to get together a passable Victorian-esque outfit without spending oodles of cash. I decided to go as a lady because, well, the clothes are more fun. ^_^
Anywho, my friend Forest was the only other person I knew who was going, but just before the ball she bailed out bcs she'd worked 75 hours this week and today is her birthday so she didn't want to be sick on it. Luckily the other people in the ballroom dance basics class I went to the past two Saturdays were there so I kinda knew people.
Upon walking into the venue I heard some really cool music from down the staircase that lead to the bathroom. Was a band performing called Agent Ribbons (wwwmyspace.com/agentribbons). I enjoyed them muchly. Wandered to the room where they were selling all sorts of period garb and ogled the clothes which were all too expensive for me to afford before heading into the ballroom.
The Tower Theater is, as one girl called it last night, an Elegant Dump. This fits the theme well, especially with large scale Edward Gorey art pieces all over the place. There was a absinthe bar in the ballroom and the dj (who spun both ball music, modern Gothic music, and the occasional Dresden Dolls, Abney Park, Gogol Bordello, and Dr Steel song) was stationed in a balcony above the stage. It was freaking sweet. They had contortionists, odd musical acts, burlesque dancers, Victorian themed dance troupes, circus performers, live ballroom music, an operatic Latino singer, and Edward Gorey children's fables acted out to music.
I just would like to interject, dear GOD the outfits were awesome: corsets as far as the eye can see, steampunk, Victorian ball gowns and tuxedos, pirates and commodores, and all sorts of other fun get-ups. Lots of pretty people wearing them too.
I tried to do the tango with one of the girls from the ballroom dancing class, but the floor was so packed that we gave up on the endeavor. I did waltz with another girl later on though, so the class was put to use a little. I actually danced with a number of pretty girls during the evening which is never a bad thing. There was one girl named Cat that dances a lot like me and we ended up dancing towards the end of the evening to "Herr Dresselmier's Doll" by Abney Park which was fun. At the end of the night I was dancing around with two girls from the ballroom dancing class and their group of friends that they made at the dance. By the time the night was over I was pooped but so terribly happy I went. I did scarf down a few pieces of pizza and abt a liter and a half of water when I got home though. Veddy, veddy tired Adam got to bed at the same time I normally get up for work. Am definitely going again next year.
Pics from the Ball are here (didn't feel like posting them all again)

Out to Malediction Society tonight for my friend's birthday party. Huzzah goth clubs. I wonder if I'll get to sleep before I head off to work at 5am tomorrow?

In New Zealand you can scale breathtaking scenery. In LA you climb further through the smog on the shattered dreams and hopes of 90% of the population.
It is so post-apocalyptic, cut throat, thunderdome that it's great. ^_^

I used to be in groups, but they all went and died on me. Ah wells, such is life, although this one died and came back (badum-ching). ~Brain-Damaged

Why yes, cross-dressing is always a pure win! And you know what, you were pretty kickass and sweet as a lady too!
Boy, do I see the Magenta-Riff Raff high five?! (Oh yes. Rocky Horror was on TV on New Year's Eve. Watching it was in fact the first thing I did in 2009. Now I can pretend I knew it all along. Hahhahahaaaa.)
Daaaaaamnit. Reading the journal and seeing the pics all I can do is just drooling and going green with envy. The funny thing is, I am pretty damn sure there ARE balls like this in the capital city somewhere(?!)... you made me want to create a corsety dress and dig into this city a bit deeper
Also gotta check out these bands you were talking about. Your taste never falied on me. (Dresden Dolls? Rasputina??)
